St. John Bread and Wine

94-96 Commercial Street, London, E1 6LZ

A restaurant where you are served simple and excellent English cuisine.

Their original restaurant (Smithfield) opened in 1994. It is a version with white tablecloths and a Michelin star where you are offered a cuisine “nose to tail”. This location is smaller and more casual. The room is packed with wooden tables. The walls are white, a few menu boards on them and the lighting is quite strong.

On the menu, simple food but extremely well executed: roast beef and radicchio, Jerusalem artichokes, fried rabbit, mutton or ox heart served with beets and horseradish. We also tried the chicken and mushroom pie which was excellent.

The idea is to take several dishes and share them.

For dessert, we recommend the madeleines sold by the dozen or half-dozen (it takes 15 minutes since they are baked for you).

Their wine selection is very attractive.

PLAN B: Before you leave St John, we advise you to purchase their granola which is to die for.
